If you would like to do some self-directed preparation prior to this course, please purchase our Heart of the Matter manual, available in the Products Page of our website. Alternately visit and print this link http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/dl/free/007351098x/451682/sample_ch05.pdf

Brief Course Description:  For a detailed agenda on the courses, please contact  Diana Curphey to receive an e-flyer.

1 Day Rhythm Interpretation and 1 Day ECG Interpretation: The combined 1 day Rhythm & 1 day ECG workshops are ideally suited for those who would like to spend more time reviewing each concept presented during the session. You may sign up for both courses or only one. If you register for both, you will need to complete the registration form for each course.

1 DAY: Rhythm Interpretation: If you are new or fairly new to telemetry monitoring, this full day rhythm interpretation workshop is ideally suited. If you are planning on doing ACLS or PALS, this course is ideal to help you in preparing for those sessions. You will learn a systematic approach to rhythm interpretation and have plenty of practice time on every rhythm strip. The day starts at the basic level of rhythm interpretation with the opportunity to identify normal and abnormal intervals and understand what is going on when the intervals are abnormal. You will also have a solid understanding of the management of the patient presenting with an abnormal rhythm according to the ACC, AHA, and ACLS guidelines. At the end of this session, you will be able to recognize normal, abnormal and life-threatening rhythms and the anticipated treatments.

1 DAY: ECG Interpretation: This course identifies a systematic approach to ECG assessment: R (Rate) - I (Intervals) – R (Rhythm) - I (Ischemia/Infarction). As the 1 Day Rhythm Interpretation workshop is focused on learning calculation of rate, identification of intervals and rhythm, the ECG Interpretation workshop quickly reviews the important pieces to remember of rhythm assessment, with the main focus of the day spent on ECG assessment. If you are new to rhythm interpretation, it is highly recommended that you attend the 1 Day Rhythm Interpretation workshop prior to attending the ECG Interpretation course. If you have experience in rhythm interpretation, this stand-alone ECG Day is ideal for you. At the end of this session, you will have learned and practiced implementing a fast and systematic approach to ECG assessment. You will have a solid understanding of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), as well as treatments and anticipated complications for each type of ACS. There will be many opportunities to practice with various case studies to help reinforce your learning.

Combined Rhythm & ECG in 1 Day: If you have experience in rhythm interpretation, and range between a novice to confident ECG assessor, this course is ideally suited for you. Concepts of basic rhythm interpretation are covered very quickly, so if you are new to rhythm interpretation, you may find this segment moderately paced.  If you are new to rhythm interpretation and would like to attend this course, it is strongly recommended that you either purchase the QRS Heart of the Matter Manual  or print off the additional website tips material prior to attending this course.

Please note: Upon a request by a group, this 1-day course may be tailored to the novice health care provider. If you are a nursing or pre-hospital care student OR are a novice group working in a department, please contact us to set up a NOVICE Combined Rhythm & ECG session.

Cardiology Update: This one or two-day Cardiology Course covers topics not discussed in the rhythm or ECG sessions. Please contact Diana Curphey, for a detailed e-flyer.

The contents covered in this course are chosen based on the needs of the group and  may cover the following: The AABCs of Cardiac and Diabetic Medications; If it Walks Like a Duck, is it Always a Duck? Conditions That Mimic an Acute MI; Heart Failure – Case Studies & Current guidelines; Cardiomyopathy: What is it? What types are there?; The Silent Killers: Conditions That May Lead to Sudden Cardiac Death in Young, Otherwise Healthy People; Women and Heart Disease; Life in the Cath Lab; Acute Coronary Syndrome; Axis Deviation, Hemiblocks, Bifascicular Blocks; VT vs SVT With Aberrancy; Case Study Jeopardy

Paediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)

The PEARS Provider Course prepares healthcare providers caring for paediatric patients with foundational skills to assess, recognize, and participate in the initial management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest.  Active case-based instruction will be used to teach students to provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within the initial minutes after response until the child is transferred to an advanced life support provider.

The goal of the PEARS Provider Course is to improve outcomes for the paediatric patient by preparing healthcare providers in assessment, early recognition, prompt communication, and initial intervention in patients with respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest by using high-performance team dynamics.

PEARS is for healthcare professionals who might encounter paediatric emergency situations during their work, including Physicians and Nurses not specializing in pediatrics or outside critical-care areas,  Nurse Practitioners, Physician assistants, EMS, Respiratory Therapists, and Outpatient clinic staff. If you work in a remote, rural, sub-urban or urban emergency department or clinic with unstable paediatric patients and want to develop more confidence in caring for these patients, this course is for you.

          TRAUMA Courses

TRAUMA COURSES: Welcome to our Trauma registration page where we have combined access to all our Trauma courses in one spot. We offer three trauma courses and a description of each is provided below: 1-Day Assessment and Management of the Adult and Paediatric Trauma Patient; Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).

1-Day Assessment and Management of the Adult and Paediatric Trauma Patient: This one-day, non-stressful trauma course has been designed by QRS Educational Services for all front-line health care professionals who are working in remote rural, non-urban and non-trauma emergency departments with patients who present with trauma. This course has been developed after receiving numerous requests from staff in a wide-variety of emergency settings who wanted to be more confident in managing the trauma patient. The focus of this course will be on establishing a systematic and rapid assessment, recognizing stable vs. unstable trauma, and stabilizing of the patient presenting with airway and respiratory compromise, shock, and neurological trauma. Class size is restricted to allow opportunities for mock scenarios and demonstration on some of the emergency procedures done for patient stabilization.

Please contact us if you would like to schedule this one-day Adult and Paediatric Trauma course at your location.

Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS): What makes the PHTLS course ideal is the fact that the course is tailored to the where the participants are working: pre-hospital EMS or Emergency departments in non-trauma hospitals and it encourages a multi-disciplinary team approach.

The North American Emergency Medical Technician's (NAEMT) PHTLS course is recognized around the world as the leading certification program for pre-hospital trauma care and pre-trauma centre hospital care. PHTLS is the only trauma course that promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to trauma assessment and care and is geared for emergency medical responders, EMTs, paramedics, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and NPs. The mission of PHTLS is to promote excellence in trauma patient stabilization and management by all providers involved in the delivery of pre trauma-hospital care through global education centered on the most current evidence-based research findings.  PHTLS emphasizes patient assessment, learning and application of critical life-saving skills, and stresses the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient, as a unique entity with specific needs.  PHTLS includes the management and stabilization of the adult, elderly and paediatric trauma patients.

"The geography of our country is huge. We have highways and farms and ATV's and boat propellers.  And the further you are from a trauma centre, the more important the skills this course teaches are."  Dr. Barbara Mainville, PHTLS Supervising Medical Director, Provincial Coordinator for Ontario.
